Why is my website so slow — and how do I fix it?

Last updated November 3, 2026

You opened your own website on your phone, watched it crawl in piece by piece, and thought: if I were a customer, I would have left. You were right to think it. Visitors decide in seconds, a page that arrives slowly feels like a business that moves slowly, and Google knows it — speed is part of how pages get ranked, so a slow site is not just annoying, it is quietly costing you customers twice. The good news is that slowness is rarely mysterious. Worldwide, the causes are the same short list.

Cause one: heavy images — the biggest one

Ask any developer on any continent and the first suspect is the same: photographs straight off a modern phone. One unoptimised photo can weigh more than an entire well-built page — several megabytes where a few hundred kilobytes would look identical on a screen. Multiply that by a gallery and the page is carrying a suitcase up a hill. The fix is unglamorous and effective: resize images to the size they are actually shown, compress them, and use modern formats. This one repair is the single largest speed gain on most small business sites.

Cause two: clutter the site is carrying

Every plugin, widget, pop-up, and leftover tool is another thing the page must fetch and assemble before it can appear. Sites collect them the way drawers collect cables — a chat tool from 2022, three trackers, a slider nobody looks at. Each one taxes every visitor, on every page, forever. Removing what is not earning its place is free speed.

Cause three: the foundation underneath

Cheap, overcrowded hosting answers requests slowly no matter how clean the site is, and an old, fragile build can make every page heavy by design. Sometimes the honest verdict is that the site needs fixing; sometimes it is that the site needs replacing, and patching it costs more than starting clean. Telling those two apart is a diagnosis job, not a guess.
