Why does my website look broken on my phone?
On your computer, your website looks fine. On your phone — where your customers actually see it — the text runs off the edge, the buttons are too small to tap, and a pop-up covers the whole screen. This is one of the most-asked website questions on earth, and it matters more than almost any other, for one simple reason: most of your visitors are on phones, and Google ranks your site by its mobile version. A site that is broken on phones is not just embarrassing — to Google, and to customers, it is simply a broken site.
Why it happens
The site was built for a big screen only. Older sites were designed at desktop width and simply shrunk for phones, or never adjusted at all. A page that does not rearrange itself for a small screen — text stacking, images resizing, menus collapsing — forces visitors to pinch, zoom, and scroll sideways. Most do not bother. They leave.
The pieces are desktop-sized. Fixed-width banners, giant images, and tables built for a monitor burst out of a phone screen. Heavy images make it worse: they load slowly on a mobile connection and shove everything around as they arrive.
The interruptions pile up. A pop-up that is a mild nuisance on a desktop can cover an entire phone screen with a close button too small to hit. Add tap targets sized for a mouse pointer instead of a thumb, and even a willing customer cannot reach you.
Fix it, or start clean?
Many mobile problems are repairs, not funerals: a proper responsive adjustment, resized images, pop-ups tamed, buttons made thumb-sized. Others are a design from another era, where patching costs more than rebuilding and the patches never quite hold. The honest first step is a diagnosis — someone looking at your actual site, on an actual phone, and telling you which one you have.
