Why did my Google Discover traffic collapse while my Search traffic is growing?

Last updated November 3, 2026

Your traffic fell off a cliff — but only in one place. Search is healthy, even growing, while Discover dropped to almost nothing. It feels like a penalty. It almost never is. Discover and Search are two different systems that judge your pages by different signals — and the fix starts with knowing which system changed its mind, and about what.

First, find out which drop you actually have

Open Google Search Console and look at the Discover performance report. You are checking one thing: is the fall spread across your whole site, or concentrated in a handful of pages?

Most Discover traffic comes from very few pages. When two or three of them age out, the graph looks like a disaster — but the problem is those pages, not your site. A site-wide fade is a different situation, usually tied to a broad change in how Google is choosing Discover stories, and it cannot be fixed page by page.

Then check the fallen pages themselves:

  1. The images. Discover is a visual feed. Pages need large images — at least 1,200 pixels wide — and your site must allow Google to use them at full size (the max-image-preview:large setting). A redesign, a new image plugin, or swapped images can quietly cost a page its Discover eligibility while Search never notices.
  2. What changed on the page. New URL, new images, a login wall or paywall added, a template change — any of these can end a page's Discover run.
  3. The dates. Compare the drop date with Google's announced updates. If the whole web felt it, you are looking at a system change, not something you broke.

If there is no manual action in Search Console, you have not been penalized. Search growing at the same time is the proof: a penalty does not spare one system and hit the other.

What not to do

Do not "refresh" the fallen pages by changing their dates and changing nothing else. Google reads that as what it is — an old page pretending to be new — and it does not restart a Discover run. Do not restructure your site chasing Discover, either: the Search growth you already have is the durable base, and it is the first thing a panic rebuild puts at risk.

What actually brings Discover back

Discover rewards pages that are genuinely new, on topics your audience is interested in, carrying strong large images Google is allowed to show. Pages return to the feed when they bring something new to say — new information, a new angle, new data — presented in a page whose images are eligible from the start. And set your expectations right: Discover traffic is borrowed attention. It spikes and it fades even when you do everything correctly. Search is the traffic you own. Build for Search, and let Discover be the bonus it is meant to be.

How we fix it

We start with the diagnosis — few-pages problem or site-wide fade — because the cure is different for each. Then we fix what is actually broken: image eligibility and page settings restored, and your new content built in the pattern that earns Discover placement while your Search keeps growing. Our SEO Setup is $350, printed on our priced menu like every price we publish. No honest studio can promise Discover traffic back — anyone who does is selling you the date-change trick above. What we can promise is that the diagnosis is right before a dollar goes anywhere.
