Should I build my own website or hire someone?

Last updated November 3, 2026

The builder advert says you can make a website in an afternoon. The agency quote says it will take weeks and cost thousands. Both leave out the real question: what will this website cost you in time, missed customers, and work you are not doing in your own business?

The real price of doing it yourself

The money side of DIY is small: a domain, hosting, and perhaps a builder plan. The true bill arrives in hours — choosing a layout, writing every page, resizing photos, making it work on phones, connecting forms, learning why something broke, and working out why Google is not showing it.

Those hours may be a fair trade when you are testing an idea, the site is simple, and you enjoy learning the tools. DIY is not a foolish choice. It becomes expensive when every hour at the screen is an hour taken from paying work, and the finished site still does not bring customers in.

When hiring someone is the sensible choice

Hire help when the website has to take bookings or payments, when being found on Google matters, when a broken site would cost you business, or when your time is worth more spent serving customers than learning a builder. Also hire when the site has stopped being a side project and become part of how the business earns money. At that point, you are not paying for pages. You are paying for the outcome the pages are supposed to produce.

The ownership rule, whoever builds it

Before you build it yourself or hire anyone, settle ownership in writing. The domain should be registered in your name. You should have the logins and access to the finished work, the content, and the accounts connected to it. You should know what happens when you want changes, and what leaving would look like.

This is where owners get trapped without noticing: the site works, but the domain, hosting, or only login belongs to someone else. Ask before the first payment, not after the relationship ends. A professional should be able to explain the handover plainly.

What the right choice looks like

You stay focused on the customers and decisions only you can make. The website is planned around what you sell, written in the words customers search, built to work on their phones, and handed over as something your business owns. Whether you build or hire, that is the standard to judge the result by.

How we fix it

If you decide to hire it out, our prices are printed: a One-page website is $500, a Business website is $800 for up to 5 pages, and Premium websites start from $1,200. Extra pages are $250, and Content Writing is $500 a page if you would rather not write it yourself. Website work is 50% to start, and the balance is due only when your finished site is ready and approved by you, before it goes live on your own domain.
