Shopify vs Wix vs WordPress — which one should my business use?
Ask this question in any business group and you will start an argument. Shopify people swear by Shopify, WordPress people swear by WordPress, and the owner who just wants to sell something and be found on Google is left more confused than before. The truth nobody selling a platform wants to print: there is no best platform. There is only the best platform for what your business actually does — and picking the wrong one costs you every month, in fees and in frustration, long after the website itself is paid for.
The honest way to choose
If you mainly sell products, look at Shopify first. It was built for stores: products, stock, payments and shipping live in one place, and the selling machinery is its whole reason for existing. So what does that mean for you? A shop that works like a shop from day one, instead of a website with a store bolted onto it.
If you mainly need a simple, professional presence, Wix is a fair fit. A few pages that say who you are, what you do and how to reach you, put together without technical skills. For a business that takes bookings or inquiries rather than baskets of products, that simplicity is a real advantage — until the business outgrows it.
If content and flexibility matter most, WordPress is the workhorse. It powers a huge share of the world's websites because it can become almost anything: a services site, a blog that brings in searches, a store, all three. The trade is upkeep — WordPress sites need their software kept updated and looked after, and a neglected one becomes a problem.
The costs nobody puts in the comparison chart
The platform fee is the smallest number in this decision. Look at the whole picture:
- Monthly fees never stop. Every platform charges rent — the plan, the apps or plugins that add the features the plan leaves out, the transaction costs. Add a year of them up before you decide which one is "cheap."
- Apps add up quietly. Booking, reviews, forms, selling tools — on every platform, the useful extras are often separate monthly charges that grow as your business grows.
- Lock-in is real. A site built on a closed platform like Wix cannot be moved off that platform at all. If you leave, you rebuild. Your domain and your Google presence can come with you; the site itself cannot. Choose like you will stay a while — because one way or another, you will.
Already on one? That usually settles it
If your business already has a website on one of these platforms, the smartest move is almost never to start over somewhere else. A site that exists, in your name, with your history on Google is worth more than a theoretically better platform starting from zero. What the site usually needs is not a new home — it is fixing: the pages put in the words customers search, the look refreshed, the basics set up so Google finds it.
