How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
More of your customers are skipping Google entirely. They open ChatGPT or another AI assistant and ask, "Who should I hire for this?" — and the assistant names two or three businesses. If yours is not one of them, you never even knew you lost the job. So owners are asking how to get on that list, and the first honest thing to know is this: there is no sign-up form, and there is no way to pay to be recommended. Anyone promising you a guaranteed AI mention is selling you something that does not exist. What does exist is a pattern — the businesses AI names are the ones it can find, read, and verify.
What AI actually reads
An AI assistant builds its answers from what is already on the web. That means your own website matters in a new way:
- Pages that answer real questions, in plain words. AI quotes text — it cannot quote your banner image or your logo. A page that says what you do, what it costs, and where you are, in sentences, gives the assistant something to repeat. Vague lines like "premium solutions for modern brands" give it nothing.
- Your prices and location in the text. Specific facts get quoted. Hidden facts get skipped — and the competitor with published prices gets named instead of you.
- The same details everywhere. Your business name, services, and contact details must match across your website, your Google profile, and every directory. When the web disagrees with itself about you, the assistant trusts somebody else.
What the rest of the web says about you
AI answers lean heavily on third-party sources — directories, "best of" lists, review sites — because those are the places it can verify you exist and are real. Being listed accurately in the directories your industry uses, and having genuine reviews customers actually wrote, is not old-fashioned housekeeping anymore. It is the evidence the assistant shows its work from.
And do not ignore Bing. Some AI tools lean on Bing's results, and most of your competitors never set Bing up at all — which makes it one of the cheapest open doors left.
Finally, test yourself the way the industry now advises: ask the AI the questions your customers ask — "best [service] in [town]," "how much does [service] cost here" — and write down who gets named. That list is your to-do list. Checked monthly, it tells you whether the work is landing.
