How do I get my business on Google Maps?

Last updated November 3, 2026

A customer searches for what you do, Google shows a map with three businesses on it, and yours is not one of them. That map place does not come from your website. It comes from a separate, free Google Business Profile — and getting it right is a sequence, not a single button.

1. Check whether you already have a listing

Search Google Maps for your business name and town before creating anything. Google may already have a basic listing for you, or an old one may exist from a previous address. Claim the existing listing. Creating a second one splits your reviews and information between two profiles and can make both perform worse.

2. Create or claim your Google Business Profile

Use your real business name — exactly as customers know it, without adding services or towns to the name to chase searches. Add your contact details, hours, website, services, and service areas. Then choose your primary category with care: of everything on the profile, the main category carries the most weight in deciding which searches your business belongs in. Add the other categories that genuinely apply after it.

3. Verify the business

Google will not fully show a business it has not verified. Google chooses the verification method — it may be a postcard, a video, or another check — and you cannot pick a different one because it looks faster. Follow the method you are given exactly, and do not keep editing the profile while verification is pending; changes can send you back into review.

4. No storefront? Use a service area

If customers do not visit your location, set the business up as a service-area business and keep your address hidden. List the towns you genuinely serve. A home-based or mobile business does not need to publish its home address to appear on the map — it needs the service area set correctly instead.

5. Complete every field, with real photos

A half-finished profile reads as a half-finished business. Fill in the description, services, hours, and attributes that apply, and add real photos: your work, your vehicle or workspace, your products, your finished results. Profiles with real photographs give a searching customer something to choose. Blank ones give them a reason to choose the business above you.

6. Build the reviews habit

Reviews are the part you cannot fill in yourself, and the part customers read first. Ask every happy customer, make asking part of finishing every job, and reply to the reviews you receive. A steady stream of recent reviews tells both Google and the next customer that the business is active and trusted.

What happens after you finish

Once verified, a profile can begin appearing within days. Getting into the top three on the map takes longer, because Google weighs how complete and trusted your profile is — and how near you are to the person searching. Distance is the one factor nobody can change. Completeness, accuracy, and reviews are the ones you control, and most competitors leave at least one of them undone.

How we fix it

Google presence is part of our SEO Setup, $350: your profile and website set up to agree with each other — same name, same details, right category, pages written in the words your customers search — so the map listing and the site behind it pull in the same direction.
