Do I need a website for my business?

Last updated November 3, 2026

You run the business from your phone, customers reach you fine, money comes in — so is a website just an expense looking for a reason? Owners ask this everywhere, and in the UK they ask it constantly. The honest answer is not "every business needs one tomorrow." It is this: everything you currently rely on to be found belongs to somebody else, and a website is the one piece of your business that is actually yours.

The ground you are standing on is rented

A social page, a marketplace listing, a directory profile — each one is a room in someone else's building. The owner of the building sets the rules, decides how many people walk past your door, and can change the locks: reach gets throttled, accounts get restricted, platforms rise and fall. None of that makes those places useless — they are good places to be seen. But being seen somewhere is not the same as having a home. Your website is the home: your name in the address, your prices printed your way, your story told in full, open day and night whether any platform is having a good week or a bad one.

Google is where the decision happens

When a stranger needs what you sell, they do not open a social app and scroll — they search. A website is what Google can actually show them: your services, your area, your reviews, your prices, in the order you chose. Without one, the searcher finds whoever does have one, including the competitor with half your experience and twice your online presence. A website also changes how you look to everyone else who checks before they commit: the customer sending real money, the supplier, the bank. A business with its own address on the internet reads as established. A business that exists only as a social page reads as temporary — even when it is not.

What "having a website" actually costs

It does not have to start big. A focused one-page website that says what you do, proves it, and makes you easy to reach covers most of what a small business needs to be found and trusted:

Start there, and every other place you appear online gets stronger, because they all point back to ground you own.
